 Why You Should Read This:

In an ideal world, fealty is given with an assumption of responsibilities on both sides.  Harold gives John what he has always needed, what can heal him.

Astolat has been writing POI stories for a while now, several of which have already been recced here because Astolat is frigging brilliant and we all know that.  The level of prose  is…  Well, just look:

He had wondered for some time now how the CIA had broken John so badly… . But this was how, of course. Layers of tarnish deliberately slopped over every ideal, telling him that he could do nothing to help others but the most ugly and banal work, that his hands could make nothing of value but murder.

So, yeah, astolat is brilliant.  This story, though.  This one took an  approach that is a fairly obvious extension of the canon dynamic and made it just beautiful.  Just gloriously, sweetly beautiful.
